Purpose of Job
The Mechanical Design Engineer will lead the design and development of automotive instrument clusters and head‑up displays (HUDs). Responsibilities include reviewing customer requirements, specifications and manufacturing constraints to create comprehensive engineering product design proposals, specifications and drawings using engineering principles and Design Engineering Standards (DES). The role also involves analyzing test data, performing root‑cause analysis, preparing 5‑Phase/5‑Why reports, engineering reports, technical presentation material, and delivering engineering presentations to internal and external customers.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

35% Lead the design and development of automotive instrument clusters (IPC) and head‑up displays (HUDs), creating 3D models and 2D drawings including GD&T for all structural components, considering DFM/DFA factors, assembly drawings, cost, material & component specifications, and other design factors; mentor in optical design and simulation; mentor support engineers in engineering calculations and stack‑up analysis; ensure development metrics comply with APICE/IATF process requirements.

20% Post‑development support: provide technical/design support during the pre‑production phase (PV testing, root‑cause analysis, 5‑Phase report preparation) and the production preparation phase (quality, assembly, process). Assist assembly plants and suppliers with quality and design issues; execute customer design changes; reflect changes in internal deliverables and documentation.

15% Interface with customers to understand design requirements during specification, styling, and product development phases; compile specification confirmation reports; mentor in structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis using FEA software.

10% Lead conceptual design, bill of materials (BOM), design feasibility studies for RFQ responses and technical presentations; develop DFMEA, DVP, failure analysis/5‑Phase reports.

5% Lead in‑vehicle performance checks at customer locations during pre‑production; evaluate design integrity; identify design flaws; compile summary reports.

5% Mentor design engineers in benchmark analysis; attend trade shows (NAIAS); compile market trend analysis of IPC/HUD products.

5% Assist in prototype development during build trials; support manufacturing plants and quality teams in resolving technical, manufacturing, and quality issues; aid in testing and evaluation of IPC/HUD products; mentor support engineers in preparation of technical documents for quality gate assessment meetings with the parent company in Japan.

Education, Experience and Knowledge
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred. Coursework or specialization in Strength of Materials, Design for Six Sigma, Statics & Dynamics, SQC, CAD/CAE, Optics principles, Materials, Manufacturing Principles.

Related Experience: 4‑8 years of automotive design and development experience; required work experience with CAD – CATIA/UG; preferred experience in automotive structures, plastics or optics; required FEA analysis knowledge for vibration, thermal, linear
on‑linear analysis; preferred working knowledge of ABAQUS; experience with optical design principles and light simulation software (OPTIS/Light Tools); required GD&T and stack‑up analysis experience.

Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday‑Friday, 8am – 5pm; off‑hours as needed.

Travel Requirements: 10‑15% internationally and/or domestically. Valid driver’s license required for domestic travel; valid passport required for international travel.
