Early Career Traction Power Design Engineer (Full‑time) – Newark, NJ or New York, NY

Join WSP’s Traction Power Team to work on projects in light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, and high‑speed rail, designing traction power systems for overhead contact or third rail.

Your Impact

Ensure that company technical policies and procedures are practiced during the execution of projects.

Develop design approaches and concepts for projects, including power distribution design for rail systems, under general supervision.

Prepare traction power system studies for AC and DC electrified railway systems.

Develop and review designs and technical specifications, meeting quality standards.

Develop construction cost estimates and design/engineering cost estimates.

Assist project managers in coordinating project designs with other disciplines and attend project meetings.

Perform site investigations in substations and other wayside infrastructure.

Participate in WSP’s quality process for all deliverables.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.

0 to 1 year of relevant post‑education experience.

Support and participate in the systems implementation phase of projects (installation, testing & commissioning, cutover, record drawings, final reports).

Support procurement efforts by authoring technical requirements, performing vendor bid evaluations and supporting vendor selection.

Commissioning of traction power distribution systems and equipment.

Good written and verbal communication skills and understanding of the English language.

Experience in a MicroStation and AutoCAD design environment for traction power system design drawings.

Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Immediate availability to work in the U.S.

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Must be flexible to a variety of schedules, able to prioritize responsibilities, and adapt quickly to change in a high‑pressure environment.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineer in Training certification.

Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.

Member of and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation
Expected Salary: $69,900 – $96,030

WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range. Compensation and benefits are based on education, experience, skills, internal equity and geographic location.
