Work Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, 100% in person (8am-3:30pm) with some evenings required for meetings and school events

Position Summary
The Visual Arts Teacher provides instruction and supervision for students in Grades 9-12. The Visual Arts Teacher is responsible for planning lessons, teaching a specific number of classes, and maintaining discipline. The person in this position will work closely with the Visual Arts Department Chair, the Directors of Middle and Upper School, other department members, faculty, students, and parents. The Visual Arts Teacher performs under the general direction of the Head of School and the daily supervision of the Director of Upper School. The individual in this position teaches and serves in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.

Responsibilities

Teach four sections of visual arts classes. Current electives include Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, and Art History.

Display student artwork publicly throughout the school buildings and work with the Visual Arts faculty to coordinate the annual art show.

Plan and execute lessons in the context of a year-long curriculum using varied methods of instruction and assessment in accordance with departmental/divisional curriculum and competencies, the School's educational philosophy, and the School's Standards of Effective Teaching.

Be available during Community Time and other times throughout the school day to provide instructional support to students both in and out of class, as needed, to answer questions regarding content, and provide support as needed.

Create and maintain an appropriate and organized classroom environment with an emphasis on the physical and emotional well-being and safety of students.

Demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the school's City as Our Campus initiative by actively seeking meaningful community connections for experiential learning opportunities within and outside the classroom.

Engage in and support the school's commitment to equity and inclusion, including but not limited to curriculum, teaching practice, and professional growth.

Demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the School's strategic priorities by designing and implementing learning experiences that are interdisciplinary, student-centered, and/or project-based.

Communicate with and respond to parents' questions and concerns in an effective and timely manner through a variety of means, including email, telephone, student progress reports, and parent notices.

Complete student assessment reports (e.g., grades reports, interim comments, etc.) in accordance with school guidelines and the deadlines established by the Director of Upper School.

Participate in a 2-year mentoring program with an experienced faculty member.

Commit to ongoing professional growth through professional development opportunities and participating in faculty review and growth processes.

Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators by attending all school-wide meetings, department meetings, Upper School faculty meetings, and in-service days, as well as serving on committees as needed.

Serve as a student advisor, as needed.

Assist the admission process by meeting with prospective families, attending admission events, and helping screen prospective candidates for admission.

Fulfill duties that are connected with non-academic responsibilities, including but not limited to serving as an advisor, monitoring study halls, and other assigned duties.

Requirements
A Bachelor's degree in visual arts, art history, or a related field, with prior classroom teaching experience. The successful candidate will be able to create an engaging and challenging learning environment for students. The individual should demonstrate and maintain an educational philosophy consistent with the School's philosophy. Strong communication skills for working effectively with colleagues and parents as well as the ability to utilize educational technology in the classroom and Google suite is required.
