Definition
The employee will produce, coordinate, and distribute video and film content as well as graphic design and website/digital content that advances the reputation and extends the reach of Norfolk Public Schools. The role combines multimedia production, graphic design, website development, and strategic communications to strengthen brand presence, engage audiences, and support organizational goals.
The Visual Storyteller produces agency‑quality nonfiction content of varying lengths, from short videos to feature‑length documentaries, and performs line production, camera work, audio production, editing, writing, post‑production, graphic content, and website content. The employee also develops relationships with staff, partner agencies, and handles project management, scheduling, and tracking of distributed work.
This role advances the reputation and branding of Norfolk Public Schools by turning data and research into cinematic stories and educating the public about the division.
Essential Functions
Design high‑quality marketing and communications materials (brochures, reports, presentations, social media graphics, advertisements, event materials).
Maintain and evolve brand identity guidelines for visual consistency across platforms.
Develop creative concepts and visual campaigns aligned with organizational messaging and strategy.
Prepare print‑ready files and coordinate with vendors when necessary.
Design, develop, and maintain the organization’s website(s) to ensure optimal functionality, performance, and user experience.
Update website content regularly and optimize for SEO and accessibility standards.
Implement landing pages, forms, and interactive features.
Monitor website analytics and recommend improvements based on data insights.
Plan, shoot, and edit high‑quality video and photo content for marketing campaigns, events, social media, and internal communications.
Produce multimedia assets including promotional videos, animations, and motion graphics.
Manage audio/visual setup for events, webinars, and recordings.
Maintain a digital asset library for media content.
Collaborate with leadership and teams to develop visual storytelling strategies.
Support content creation for digital campaigns, newsletters, and social media.
Ensure all communications materials align with brand voice and messaging.
Perform other duties and manage special projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of professional camera operation for photography and videography.
Ability to create graphics using Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, or other graphic design tools.
Strong portfolio demonstrating design, web, and multimedia work.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects).
Experience with website platforms such as WordPress, Webflow, or similar CMS.
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and preferably JavaScript.
Experience with video editing and production workflows.
Understanding of SEO, UX/UI principles, and digital best practices.
Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines and calmly communicate during critical situations.
Demonstrated ability to organize and present information, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Communications, Web Development, Media Production, Fine Arts, or related field (or equivalent experience). Minimum of three years of professional experience in graphic design, website development, and media production.
License/Certification
None. Commercial Drone Pilot’s license preferred.
