Software Engineer — Design Automation
PetsApp, San Diego, CA, United States
Help reinvent how housing gets designed, permitted, and built in America.
Cedar is building the operating system for urban housing delivery. We combine architectural expertise with software, automation, and data systems to dramatically accelerate how projects move from land acquisition to approved designs and construction. The result: faster timelines, higher quality, lower risk, and more housing in the cities that need it most.
Our team blends architects, engineers, and product builders. We design real buildings — and we build the software systems that make great architecture scalable.
The Role
Software Engineer — Design Automation
Cedar is looking for a Software Engineer to build the tools that architects use every day. This role sits at the intersection of design workflows and Cedar’s AI platform, with ownership over how our automation shows up inside Revit and other BIM environments.
You’ll be responsible for building and maintaining Revit plugins that surface Cedar’s AI-powered feasibility, zoning intelligence, and design systems directly in the tools architects already use. This is a highly applied role: you’ll work closely with architects, computational designers, and product engineers to turn real workflow pain into fast, reliable software.
If you’re excited about making advanced automation feel native inside design tools — and about shipping software that changes how buildings actually get made — this role is for you.
What You’ll Do
Build and maintain Revit plugins that integrate Cedar’s AI and data systems into daily architectural workflows
Design clean, intuitive UX for architects inside Revit (commands, panels, workflows, feedback loops)
Work closely with architects and computational designers to deeply understand real design and documentation workflows
Partner with Cedar’s platform engineers to integrate APIs, models, and services into production tools
Own the reliability, performance, and usability of design automation tools used on real projects
Rapidly prototype workflow improvements and productionize the best ones
Help define Cedar’s long-term approach to design automation inside BIM tools
Who You Are
You care about craft — both in software and in the user experience of real practitioners
You enjoy working across disciplines and translating messy real-world workflows into clean systems
You’re motivated by tools that create leverage for people, not just abstract infrastructure
You’re comfortable owning features end-to-end, from UX to architecture to deployment
You like shipping, learning from real usage, and iterating fast
Qualifications
3+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong experience with Python and pyRevit for Revit plugin development
Comfort working with APIs, services, and integrating backend systems into frontend tools
Familiarity with AEC workflows, BIM, parametric/computational design, or design automation
Experience working with AI-powered tools, geometry processing, or data-driven design systems
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary
Meaningful equity ownership
Healthcare, dental, and vision
Early-stage ownership and impact
