
Roadway Design Engineer - SME

Job Summary LJB Inc. is a growing, forward‑thinking engineering firm that delivers innovative, community‑focused infrastructure solutions across the country. We are seeking an experienced Roadway Design Engineer – SME to support and grow our Transportation Practice in our Charlotte, NC office. The role is open to fully remote candidates located in North Carolina.
Compensation and Benefits Annual Compensation: $110,000–$155,000 based upon experience, certifications, and regional market standards.

Essential Functions Perform engineering design tasks for roadway projects from preliminary to final design.
Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
Establish working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers, especially with NCDOT, local governments, and private clients.
Provide engineering design services for traditional design‑bid‑build projects and design‑build transportation projects.
Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans, including implementation and knowledge of cross sections, traffic control, drainage, signing and pavement markings plans.
Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost, and scheduling performance.
Identify schedule and cost variances and develop and implement recommendations for corrective action.
Participate in projects by completing tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
Actively participate and serve in a leadership position in transportation‑related organizations such as ASHE, ASCE, DBIA, etc.
Other duties as assigned.
Education Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required.
P.E. license required; North Carolina PE preferred. Successful candidates will be expected to obtain their NC PE within the first year of hire.
Qualifications 10 to 20 years of progressive engineering experience possessing a broad knowledge and experience in transportation and roadway design.
5 years of project management experience preferred.
Experience working on DOT design projects required; experience with multiple DOTs is a plus.
MicroStation, GEPak, OpenRoads Designer software experience preferred.
