
Communications Manager - College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

Overview Department: Dean Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. Salary: 56,800 - 64,600. Description: Manages communications activities to promote the advancement of a major university program or center through the planning and coordination of its publications and media relations. This position will work within the Communications Division in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) to create a variety of content that showcases CLASS departments and centers. The scope of work includes writing website copy; writing stories about students, faculty, staff and alumni; creating engaging social media content across multiple platforms; and potentially writing copy for print publications.

Responsibilities Designs and coordinates publications for the program, including brochures, newsletters, annual reports and other marketing and promotional materials.
Manages the design and update of program web sites.
Coordinates the procurement and management of graphic design, printing and other publication-related services.
Writes and disseminates news and press releases for the program.
Develops and maintains positive working relationships with external media organizations, as well as the university's media relations department.
Manages advertising, marketing and publications for promotional events and other special programs.
Participates in the strategic planning process related to marketing and promotion of the program.
Writes and edits articles, speeches, and other communication projects as assigned.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Candidates Should Therefore Have Excellent writing skills
Experience conducting interviews
Solid knowledge of AP Style
The ability to write accurately, engagingly and on deadline
Knowledge of content management systems (Drupal, Schoolhouse, FinalSite, Wix, WordPress, etc.)
Knowledge of social media writing/headline styles and posting judgment
Knowledge of still photography shooting and editing
Knowledge of video production and storytelling styles
Technical knowledge of video and photographic equipment including video and still cameras, video editing software, associated hardware, and computers
A portfolio of work that showcases article/web writing and social media content creation
Excellent time and project management skills
Exhibit an excellent, customer-service-focused approach to working with departments, centers and fellow team members
An understanding that stories and events assigned for coverage may happen outside the usual work hours of 8am to 5pm.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and be both a creative self-starter as well as a collaborative team player. It is essential that this person understands writing and content creation best practices and can demonstrate instances of harnessing trends and increasing engagement. This position is rooted in journalism values and traditions, with a sharp focus on 21st century digital media. Experience at a multi-departmental institution or university is very helpful but not required.
