ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision of the NPD Engineering Manager, the NPD Design Engineer is responsible for design efforts from inception through production in new product development. This position will focus on washing and classifying equipment such as sand screws, log washers, coarse material washers, sand classifiers, dewatering screens, centrifugal pumps, and cyclones. Experience with these products is preferred but not mandatory.

The preferred site location is Yankton, SD. Applicants from all Astec locations are encouraged to apply.

The Design Engineer position at Astec has four levels dependent on experience and specialty. Engineers specialize in new and existing product development/design, product safety, manufacturing set‑up, hydraulic and electrical product development/design. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other engineers, cross‑functional teams—including sales, manufacturing, purchasing and service—to develop conceptual and final design solutions, manage and coordinate project activities, support existing product offerings, and perform testing or analysis of new and existing products to further Astec’s product line development goals.

Design Engineers may be asked to travel to develop business relationships with customers, dealers and suppliers, and may participate in product focus groups to gain critical customer application and design suggestions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform design engineering as relates to Astec product development and improvement projects.

Effectively use 3‑D CAD to model designs and use other engineering tools like FEA to optimize solutions.

Create, check, and maintain thorough engineering specifications and drawings.

Manage engineering changes per established company procedures.

Serve as a technical resource for operations, quality, purchasing, service, and other departmental needs.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY
None.

INTERNAL CONTROLS AUTHORITY
The Design Engineer is responsible for certain internal control responsibilities that have been verbally communicated and are reviewed periodically.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Agriculture, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

Experience with engineering design process, new product development, CAD modeling and simulation, reading and creating engineering drawings and standards, materials science, manufacturing practices, and cross‑functional teamwork.

Proficient with personal computing, Microsoft Office Suite, 3‑D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and ERP systems (Oracle preferred).

Good organization and time‑management skills.

Ability to set daily priorities, adjust to sudden changes, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Willingness to accept responsibility for assigned tasks and take on new challenges.

Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.

Effectively interpret sketches, marked‑up prints, and verbal instructions to drive concept to solution.

Review customer drawings, specifications, and other applicable documents to determine requirements and feasibility of components.

Develop design concepts meeting cost objectives, involving supply‑chain operations for component selection.

Conduct necessary computations such as load development, stress analysis, hydraulic circuit analysis, and costing; interpret results.

Achieve due dates and predefined requirements set by management.

Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing or design issues and implement cost‑reduction ideas.

Use root‑cause analysis and problem‑solving skills to identify improvement opportunities and implement corrective actions.

Follow internal standards and company policies, with a primary emphasis on safe operations.

Follow and support all company policies and procedures, including safe‑work practices.

Perform work according to supervisor’s directives when requested.

Document assigned tasks as required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) per training guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The position requires a stationary presence at least 50% of the time, frequent computer use, occasional handling of tools and equipment, and communication. The employee must transport up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally, use lifting devices or help for >25 pounds, and may need to travel by land or air for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Typical office environment with occasional exposure to shop manufacturing, including noise, vibration, fumes, and machinery.
