The Role
The Communications Associate is a mid‑level, high‑impact opportunity within our growing Communications and Marketing team. The role touches every facet of the communications function—from strategic planning and creative ideation to project management, writing, social media, and email campaign execution. Working with the Director of Communications & Marketing and the Associate Director of Communications, you will own several communications workstreams and play a key supporting role on project initiatives that advance long‑range goals.

Key Responsibilities
What You Will Do
Report to the Associate Director of Communications. Core responsibilities include:
Communications Strategy Support
Support development of creative, innovative communications plans in collaboration with leadership.
Clarify communications goals, audiences, and desired impact for priority initiatives.
Coordinate with program leads to translate strategy into actionable communications work plans.
Contribute messaging, narratives, and content angles that reflect Impact Justice’s mission and values.
Project Tracking
Lead day‑to‑day project tracking for communications workstreams, including timelines, owners, dependencies, and deadlines.
Maintain project plans and task tracking in tools like Asana.
Monitor progress, flag risks, and propose adjustments to keep work on track.
Support meeting preparation, action items, and clear next steps.
Content Development and Editorial Support
Draft and edit communications materials (email, press releases, media pitches, web copy, toolkits, internal communications).
Review and refine materials drafted by teammates to ensure clarity, tone, accuracy, and alignment with goals.
Uphold quality and consistency across outward‑facing communications.
Support content planning by identifying needs, timing, and formats for key initiatives.
Media Relations Support
Monitor relevant news and media opportunities connected to Impact Justice’s work.
Write compelling media pitches to secure impact‑driven press coverage.
Support intake and routing of press inquiries in alignment with priorities.
Coordinate logistics for interviews and media engagements.
Track media placements, share patterns, and learnings with the team.
Social Media and Digital Campaign Support and Execution
Create, schedule, and publish social media content (primarily Instagram and LinkedIn).
Support multi‑channel campaign execution, including social and email planning and calendars.
Track performance metrics and synthesize learnings into improvements.
Maintain a steady, high‑quality publishing rhythm while remaining responsive to timely moments.
Build brand authenticity and community through social listening and direct audience engagement.
Communications Asset Maintenance and Process Refinement
Maintain core communications assets, including routine website updates and page upkeep.
Organize and maintain shared drives and asset libraries (e.g., Google Drive) with version control.
Keep templates, trackers, and shared resources updated.
Refine team processes for drafting, review, approvals, publishing, and archiving to improve clarity.
Support smooth operations by ensuring systems remain current and well‑documented.
Required Qualifications
At least 3 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, digital communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
Strong writing and editing skills; able to translate complex topics into clear, engaging communications.
Experience supporting earned media work (pitching, interview coordination, press materials, or outreach tracking).
Project management and tracking experience, including maintaining timelines and stakeholder coordination (Asana or similar preferred).
Digital communications experience (social media creation/scheduling, email campaigns via Mailchimp).
Basic design or multimedia skills (e.g., Canva) and comfort working within brand guidelines.
Experience maintaining communications assets and systems (website CMS, shared drives, templates).
Operational strength and follow‑through, including attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; collaborate with colleagues and cross‑organization stakeholders.
Ability to work independently with general direction, while collaborating with leadership and staff.
Alignment with Impact Justice’s mission and values; thoughtful approach to communications in a social justice context.
Preferred Qualifications
Comfort using basic analytics and reporting (social insights, email performance, website metrics).
Experience utilizing relevant AI tools to ethically and strategically enhance team capacity.
Experience developing and maintaining content workflows (review, approvals, publishing, asset management).
Experience in nonprofit or mission‑driven communications, especially related to criminal legal system reform, juvenile justice, or adjacent issues.

Our anticipated start date is Spring 2026. Starting salaries are fixed at $70,304 with annual increases defined by the collective bargaining agreement. This role is a bargaining‑unit position represented by OPEIU International annually and includes medical, dental, FSA plans, significant vacation and wellness leave, and immediate 401(k) vesting with a generous match. Full‑time, salaried position; hybrid schedule (minimum two in‑office days per week). In‑office location must be Oakland, CA; Los Angeles, CA; or Washington, DC. Remote applicants are not considered.
