Communications Assistant/Dispatch

Maintains essential functions of the Campus Safety Main Office and Dispatch Center. Requires an understanding of relevant policies, procedures, and systems utilized by the Campus Safety Department. Must be capable of functioning independently and supervising student workers during 2nd shift operations. Competent, courteous, and composed customer service are essential for this position. This position requires reliable onsite attendance, as the Campus Safety Dispatcher plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the campus community.

Responsibilities

Operate the IWU switchboard, phones, and 2‑way radio system; receive and service walk‑in, phone, and email inquiries and calls‑for‑service; maintain real‑time communication and dispatch officers; communicate internally and with first responders and 3rd parties as needed for service delivery and incident response.

Issue and replace IDs, implement ID processes for student move‑ins, issue and track parking passes and visitor passes, distribute keys, maintain key inventories, administer lost & found, and maintain service logs.

Maintain records and logs of Campus Safety calls and operations; monitor event and activity schedules; coordinate electronic access control settings and schedules; run motor vehicle record checks; maintain records for the IWU vehicle safety program.

Monitor camera, phone, and access control systems; remotely support officers; make appropriate contacts for after‑hours incident response; log and track Campus Safety Department activities; facilitate communication between Campus Safety, other IWU Departments, public first responders, and external partners.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.

One year of professional experience in a dispatch center, operations center, call center, or other position involving communication, coordination, dispatch services, or similar operations.

Clear verbal communication, patience, and professionalism in delivering service to a diverse campus community.

Experience with (or demonstrated ability to learn) the operation of telephone switchboards, access control software, and similar technical systems.

Independent motivation and time‑management skills.

Ability to maintain a regular on‑campus shift schedule.

Shift schedule: Mon‑Tues 4:00–10:00 pm, Wed 3:30–10:00 pm, Thurs‑Fri 4:00–10:30 pm.

Physical demands: Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
