Overview

The purpose of this position is to develop the skills and abilities necessary to provide neurophysiological monitoring during surgical procedures.
Scope

Works under the supervision of a physician and/or an Intra-Operative Neuromonitorist. This job is a short-term training role. It is expected that employees will complete Intermountain's basic clinical competencies and obtain a CNIM within 18 months of hire/transfer into this job.

Job Essentials

While being trained, employees are expected to learn and become fully proficient in the following:
Communicate with surgical staff to establish correct site, type of surgery and placement of equipment in room.
Recognize all observed changes in patient based on monitoring and communicate with supervising intraoperative neurophysiologist and surgical staff during surgery.
Ensure patient safety relative to history and contraindications for specific stimulation or monitoring techniques.
Communicate necessary information to the surgeon and anesthesiologist and, if applicable, the monitoring physician/intraoperative neurophysiologist, to optimize patient outcome.
Remove electrodes and clean up patients post monitoring.
Develop skills in somatosensory evoked responses, motor evoked responses, EMG and other monitoring procedures.
Manage hospital and patient resources effectively and efficiently to ensure optimal patient outcomes and to maintain financial stability of the department.
Document in an accurate, legible, complete and timely manner to ensure conformance with current regulatory standards.
Minimum Qualifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
Knowledge of computer software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors or Master's degree in Neuroscience or a related life science field.
Experience with medical terminology or anatomy.
Experience in a patient care setting.
Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, sterile indicator tags, colors, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment and instruments with precision and accuracy. This includes computer use and typing for documentation, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
May be expected to stand in a stationary position with personal protective equipment for an extended period of time.
