Summary
Responsible for the management of the Hardware Development department's PLD Development team. Leads the PLD Development team in executing established DO‑254 development processes for avionics firmware. Responsibilities span the full development life cycle, including requirements analysis and review, PLD architecture and design, code implementation, low‑level verification, hardware integration testing, and investigation and resolution of problem reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leads, directs, and tracks the architecture, design, implementation, verification, and certification of PLD solutions for avionics products, ensuring compliance with program, quality, and airworthiness requirements.

Oversees product development activities including device selection, requirements decomposition, PLD architecture, RTL design, verification strategy, and configuration management in accordance with DO‑254 and internal development processes.

Supports proposal and capture activities by developing high‑level PLD concepts and architectures, and by providing non‑recurring engineering estimates, recurring cost inputs, manpower plans, and schedule assessments.

Plans and manages departmental resources, including staffing levels, skill mix, and workload prioritization; establishes and maintains PLD development policies, procedures, and work instructions.

Directs and coordinates all technical activities required to execute PLD development projects, including cross‑functional collaboration with systems, hardware, software, verification, and certification teams.

Evaluates staff technical competencies and actively develops team capability through mentoring, training, and continuous improvement to enhance execution quality and overall organizational performance.

Responsible for enforcing and maintaining PLD‑related Business Management System (BMS) policies, procedures, and work instructions.

Occasional travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.

10+ years of experience with firmware development, preferably including 2+ years in a management/supervisory position.

Computer Skills

Proficient with personal computers and computer operating systems.

Proficient with hardware development environments.

Ability to apply understanding of configuration management systems.

Language Skills

Ability to write professional correspondence and effectively communicate information to other employees in English.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply understanding of mathematics related to the design and development of digital electronics (Boolean algebra, DeMorgan’s theorem, Karnaugh maps, etc.).

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to assimilate information from diverse sources to form a complete situational picture and develop a plan of action to accomplish a task.

Ability to use process of elimination when diagnosing problems.
