Primary Purpose
Assist in preparation and serving the appropriate quantities of food to meet planned menu requirements. Maintain high standards of quality in food production, sanitation, safety practices, and customer service.
Duties/Responsibilities
Assist with general kitchen tasks
Cook and prepare meals according to the menu
Serve food according to meal schedules and procedures
Ensure portion control
Maintain order and cleanliness of the kitchen
Follow safety guidelines when operating equipment
Follow all industry standard guidelines for food safety and sanitation
Ensure counting and claiming process are followed according to USDA/TDA guidelines
If assigned, carry out other specific kitchen roles (e.g., dishwasher, cashier, push meals to other areas of school)
Provide good customer service to maintain good customer relationships
Process cash handlings accurately and in a timely fashion
Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements
Education: High School diploma or GED preferred; may substitute equivalent work experience.
Experience: Experience in school food service/food service.
Certifications: Current Food Handler Permit (or ability to obtain within first 20 days of hire). Knowledge of kitchen equipment and food production procedures. Capable of operating small and large kitchen equipment and tools.
Required Skills and Abilities
Communication: Ability to communicate with all levels of personnel, students, and parents.
Bilingual: Ability to read, analyze, and apply instructions in written or oral English.
Technology: Ability to learn and use required software (POS, clock‑in/out, etc.), basic office equipment, and basic arithmetic operations.
Physical Demands and Environmental Factors
Stand and walk for the entire shift.
Reach, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, and bend often.
Lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
Noise levels moderate to high; frequent interruptions; extended periods viewing a computer screen.
Other Qualifications
Criminal records check, pre‑hire and annually thereafter, if applicable. Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization.
Work Environment
The work environment requires proximity to other employees, frequent interruptions, extended periods of time viewing a computer screen, standing, and moderate to high noise levels. Activity from other employees and students may be distracting.
