
Meter Technician

Overview
The purpose of this position is to perform technical and field work related to the reading, installation, maintenance, and repair of water meters and AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) devices. Work involves completing meter reading routes, ensuring accurate data collection, addressing customer inquiries, performing meter installations, repairs, and replacements, conducting service connections and disconnections, and assisting with leak detection and consumption investigations. Other duties include maintaining vehicles and tools and completing miscellaneous work orders.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Reads and verifies water meters using handheld or AMI systems; records accurate consumption data and completes assigned routes.
Investigates irregular or zero-consumption accounts by testing meters, verifying readings, inspecting service lines, and replacing meters as needed.
Installs, maintains, and repairs meters, meter boxes, and AMI endpoints; replaces damaged or aged components and ensures proper calibration and communication.
Connects and disconnects water services in accordance with established procedures.
Inspects meters and connections for leaks, damage, defects, or unauthorized usage; reports irregularities or tampering to supervisor.
Performs minor maintenance, including cleaning, sealing, adjusting, or raising meters and boxes.
Provides customer service by explaining meter readings, addressing consumption concerns, and identifying possible leaks.
Maintains accurate work orders, service records, and field data in the City’s asset management system, GIS, and meter reading software.
Assists other utility crews as needed and performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High School diploma or GED required
One (1) year of experience in water meter installation, maintenance, or field utility operations.
Experience with AMI systems such as MasterMeter, preferred.
Experience with GIS or asset management platforms (ESRI, Cartegraph, etc.), preferred.
Certifications & Licenses
Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with clear driving record
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of AMI/AMR water meter technology, telemetry, and communication systems.
Ability to interpret maps, construction drawings, and service records.
Understanding of water distribution systems, meter hydraulics, and standard safety procedures.
Knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques used in meter reading, maintenance, and installation.
Skill in operating hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to operate a computer and use basic software applications for communication, data entry, and reporting.
Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, customers, and supervisors, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to alphabetize and numerically sequence materials.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public.
Strong attention to detail, recordkeeping, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently or as a part of a team under varying weather conditions.
