The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a

Streets Maintenance Worker

for the

Public Works Department .

Responsibilities

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing town streets, sidewalks, storm drainage, etc.

Operates dump trucks to haul dirt, gravel, and equipment; operates loaders; may operate backhoes to load materials or dig in locations that do not require significant skill.

Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.

Hand grades streets, ditches, and driveways.

Cleans storm drains and catch basins; mows, trims, and landscapes work area; assists with installing storm drainpipes.

Sets up safety cones and signs and may flag traffic around construction sites.

Operates dump truck to push snow or shovels snow from sidewalks or other areas.

Participates on team to erect street signs, paint street markings, and repair and maintain traffic signals.

Trims weeds and shrubbery; trims trees with chain saws.

Performs routine equipment checks for proper operation.

Completes work orders with tasks performed.

May operate street sweeper to clean streets.

May operate leaf vac equipment.

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the assigned work.

Working knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.

Working knowledge of concrete and masonry construction and finishing.

Some knowledge of the proper placement of traffic safety signs and cones.

Skill in the operation of dump trucks and other light and medium equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Ability to complete simple records.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED required

Class A CDL with tanker, Pesticide License preferred

Some experience in concrete or asphalt construction or maintenance work

Depending on the position, the Town may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Background and Eligibility
Applicants may be subject to a criminal background check. Effective October 1, 2025, in accordance with North Carolina state law, all applicants for positions that involve working with children in any capacity are required to undergo criminal history record checks conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Credit and motor checks are required for some administrative, finance and operational positions. Applicants will be required to take and pass a Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol screen once they are verbally given a conditional offer of employment.
