Experience: A minimum of three years successful teaching experience
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Skills working effectively with people; effective writing and speaking skills; knowledge of curriculum; ability to employ a variety of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to learners; ability to deal with multiple tasks
Primary Function
The Media Specialist participates as a member of the instructional team, planning with the administrator and teachers to provide intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats, to provide instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas, to develop a media collection that supports all areas of the curriculum, and to work with other educators to design learning strategies that meet the needs of individual students
Performance Responsibilities
As Teacher
Plans and works collaboratively with classroom teachers to integrate literature, resources, and information literacy skills into the curriculum in accordance with state standards
Teaches students and teachers how to appropriately assess, evaluate, and utilize information
Assists students and teachers in becoming effective users of resources and technology
Participates fully with the instructional team as a curriculum resource
Engages in professional development to become familiar with current educational trends and technologies
Promotes literature, reading and intellectual freedom through a variety of activities
Schedules events and activities to promote reading
Provides reader advisory services (recommendations, composing bibliographies and databases)
Creates displays and/or multimedia related to the media program
Promotes reading across the curriculum
As Instructional Partner
Collaborates with teachers and assists in selection, location, and integration of resources to support standards-based instruction
Collaborates with teachers to incorporate information literacy skills into the instructional program
Assists with instruction and evaluation of collaboratively planned units
Gathers input from the school community to develop the media collection that supports the curriculum and fosters a love of reading
Works closely with teachers to design authentic instruction and assessment
Provides information about and complies with copyright laws
Conducts in-service activities that provide information to teachers about educational media and technology as needed or requested
As Information Specialist
Acquires and evaluates information resources
Models correct strategies for accessing information within and beyond the media center
Integrates technology into the school environment
Teaches the value, quality and ethical use of information sources
Provides orientation for new students and staff as needed
Promotes awareness of other resources such as public and college libraries, online services and community resources
As Program Administrator
Advocates the library media program
Interacts professionally with students, parents and colleagues
Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of media content
Models correct use of language, oral and written
Works cooperatively with school administrators, special support personnel, colleagues and parents
Assumes responsibility for the media center
Protects records, equipment, materials and facility
Assumes responsibility for supervising students in their care
Complies with school, system and state regulations and board of education policies
Enforces regulations concerning student conduct and discipline
Is punctual
Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities
Complies with attendance policies
Directs all activities related to program
Participates in formation of and ensures convening of school media committee
Seeks involvement and input from members of media committee
Informs media committee of needs assessment results and progress toward goals
Recommends media plan, policies and procedures to media committee
Informs users of media policies and procedures
Conducts activities as specified in media plan
Evaluates and revises media plan as necessary
Instructs and supervises staff and volunteers
Maintains a calendar and effective scheduling system
Maintains accurate circulation and retrieval system
Promotes accessibility to media resources and facility
Maintains an attractive and functional facility
Informs users of resources, services and special events
Maintains accurate catalog of resources and shelf list
Maintains accurate catalog of patrons
Maintains accurate equipment inventory
Maintains accurate financial records consistent with local procedures
Develops and maintains media collection
Selects media materials and equipment based on identified needs of instructional program and individual users
Analyzes collection based on curriculum objectives
Chooses media consistent with adopted selection policy and identified needs
Utilizes a variety of selection aids and resources
Seeks input from school staff in regard to curricular and equipment needs
Ensures shelving or filing of resources and equipment
Inspects, maintains, and weeds resources and equipment
Coordinates acquisition, processing and organization of media resources
Orders resources consistent with local policy and procedures
Ensures processing of resources in a timely manner
Catalogs and arranges collection according to an accepted classification system
Performs other duties as designated by the Principal or the System Media Coordinator
