Social Worker – In‑Patient – Behavioral Health – Second Chance Unit / 3N
The Second Change Program is a partnership between the NYS Office of Mental Health and NYP. Its purpose is to improve the care of NY’s long‑stay psychiatric population. This program is focused on those who have had long, continuous hospitalizations because of persistent psychotic symptoms and behaviors that interfere with community living. Although their illnesses have prevented them from living in the community in the past, these patients have the potential for improvement and eventual discharge from the hospital. Treatment consists of medication, intensive education about mental illnesses and its treatment, social skills training, skills for community living and discharge planning. The program also addresses drug abuse and other problems that may cause relapse.

This is a full‑time day shift position located at NewYork‑Presbyterian/Westchester Behavioral Health Center.

Preferred Criteria

Knowledge of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Required Criteria

Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW)

Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW) by the state of NY within 1 year of hire

Limited Permit (must supply exam date prior to start of employment)

Fieldwork or previous experience in a psychiatric setting

Form a therapeutic relationship with patients and maintain a neutral therapeutic stance

Knowledge base of bio‑psychosocial model, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM‑IV) diagnoses, criteria for treatment of different diagnoses in an acute care setting, behavioral risk factors and of the impact of mental illness upon individual and family functioning

Competency in individual, family and group treatment modalities and treatment techniques appropriate to an inpatient treatment setting

Conduct initial evaluations and psychosocial assessments and to establish individualized and measurable treatment goals

Knowledge base of community and discharge planning resources and processes

Effective organizational skills to manage clinical, discharge planning and documentation requirements within assigned LOS of inpatient hospitalization

Communicate effectively and to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team; demonstrated self‑awareness to identify learning needs and capacity to apply supervisory feedback into practice

Please note that all roles require on‑site presence (variable by role). Therefore, all employees should live within a commutable distance to NYP. NYP will not reimburse for travel expenses.
