Summary

Position located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – Veterans Health Administration (VHA) – VA Mid‑Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) – Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (HVAMC) – Community Based Clinics (CBOC) Service Line at the North Battlefield VA Clinic. This role is part of the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program/Outpatient Mental Health Services and provides psychosocial and case‑management services to Veterans enrolled in BHIP care.
Qualifications

Applicants may be referred and tentatively selected while pending completion of required education or certification and licensure; they may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements

United States citizenship (non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens can be recruited)
Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Doctoral degrees are not substitutes.
Verification of degree through CSWE accreditation list.
Licensure: Licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at master’s level. Current state requirements available at

state list .
VHA may waive licensure for GS‑9 grade applicants pending completion of state prerequisites; licensure required for GS‑11 and above.
GS‑9 appointments: must obtain licensure within 3 years of appointment.
Most states require 2 years of post‑MSW experience before licensure; VHA allows an additional year to pass the exam.
States with longer prerequisites (e.g., California, Washington) require licensure within 1 year of meeting prerequisites.
Unlicensed workers must be supervised by a licensed VA staff member with access to the electronic health record.
English language proficiency required for appointment.

Duties

Provide case management to Veterans with complex needs, including dual diagnoses.
Manage caseload and coordinate with BHIP and Mental Health Teams to facilitate Veteran engagement in treatment.
Assess needs, strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and abilities of Veterans to guide treatment planning.
Offer psychosocial interventions, facilitate treatment planning and goal setting, and monitor progress during plan reviews.
Serve as liaison and consultant for Veterans and families regarding community resources, VA benefits, specialty programs, and advanced directives.
Provide consultation to BHIP team members, other program staff, and community resources to coordinate care and promote recovery‑oriented mental health care.
Establish and maintain relationships with Veterans, conduct follow‑up after referrals or missed sessions, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Provide services for high‑risk patients and perform home visits or outreach as required.
Lead psycho‑educational groups to increase understanding of mental health recovery, BHIP model, and treatment options.
Interpret data, incorporate medical record information, and identify appropriate treatment options.
Practice trauma‑informed mental health care, acknowledging the impact of trauma on mental health and relationships.
Maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and families.
Communicate effectively with Veterans, families, staff, and community agencies.
Support mission policies, procedures, and maintain productivity and quality standards.
Assist supervisors and program leaders in designing, developing, and implementing clinical programs.
Comply with national and local performance measures and CPRS documentation procedures.
Ensure timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation.
Demonstrate proficiency in software applications for document drafting, data management, and other computer systems.
Report problems to supervisors and recommend solutions.
Attend administrative, informational, and regular staff meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00–4:30 pm. Telework: ad‑hoc; this position is not virtual.
