Job Summary
Under direct supervision of the Chief Building Official, the Building Inspector inspects routine and complex structural systems at various stages of new construction, alterations, and repairs. The inspector ensures compliance with building codes, general land use standards, and all adopted city, state, and national construction codes to protect public life and safety. The role requires extensive interaction with builders, contractors, designers, homeowners, and other customers to explain codes and ordinances.

Salary
Building Inspector I: Hiring range $25.42 – $29.87; Salary range $25.42 – $34.32.
Building Inspector II: Hiring range $27.88 – $33.46; Salary range $27.88 – $39.04.
Building Inspector III: Hiring range $34.98 – $41.97; Salary range $34.98 – $48.97.
Building Inspector IV: Hiring range $39.17 – $47.01; Salary range $39.17 – $54.85.
Requirements
Education
Required: High School/GED.
Experience and Certifications
Building Inspector I
Required: 2 years of municipal building department or construction related experience.
Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC within one year of hire, or State of Colorado Journeyman’s or Master Plumber’s license, or Journeyman’s or Master Electrician’s license required.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Building Inspector II
Required: 3 years of municipal building department or construction related experience.
Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC within one year of hire.
Two of the following certifications required: ICC certification in a building, plumbing, or mechanical discipline; State of Colorado Journeyman’s license; State of Colorado Master Electrician’s license.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Building Inspector III
Required: 5 years of municipal building department or construction related experience.
Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC within one year of hire.
Two of the following certifications required: ICC certification in a building, plumbing, or mechanical discipline; State of Colorado Master Electrician’s license.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Building Inspector IV
Required: 8 years of experience in municipal building inspection.
Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC required.
Three of the following certifications required: ICC certification in a building, plumbing, or mechanical discipline; State of Colorado Master Electrician’s license.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of city, state, national, and related codes; methods, materials, and techniques of the trade; safety practices and precautions.
Ability to interpret plans and blueprints, diagnose hazards and defects, enforce regulations fairly, and establish successful working relationships with involved parties.
Excellent communication skills; team player; customer service oriented.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Light to moderate effort, frequent standing or walking, maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks; frequent work with light objects and light hand tools.
Exposure to heat and noise; work outdoors in the elements.
