
Orthopedic/Durable Medical Equipment tech

Overview
Description
— This role supports the physician team by handling casting, splinting, minimal wound care and durable medical equipment (DME). The Orthopedic/DME tech focuses on fitting, refitting, custom measurements, education, and patient satisfaction, providing appropriate splints, casts or DME in accordance with patient benefits and approved exceptions. The role aims to improve quality, efficiency, and access to care.
Responsibilities
Provide casts/splints and DME as requested by the physician team.
Assist in resolving patient DME problems.
Process orders for supplies and equipment as medically necessary and prescribed by OCC physicians.
Update authorizations as needed or requested by involved physicians/physician assistants.
Track and maintain up-to-date, accurate inventory and reorder documentation on equipment and supplies.
Follow up with appropriate clinicians to ensure that supplies/equipment are medically necessary and delivered in a timely fashion.
Produce, copy, fax or mail equipment prescriptions as requested.
Conduct follow-up telephone calls with patients to ensure satisfaction with equipment purchases/modifications and bring concerns to management as necessary.
Complete letters of medical necessity for equipment and supplies with appropriate clinical input.
Educate patients on insurance plans and provisions, financial responsibility, and collection of patient portion.
Ensure that all necessary documentation and authorization is obtained as it relates to payer requirements.
Working Conditions
Typical business office environment.
Potential local travel.
Constant viewing of computer monitor, mousing and typing.
Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
Frequent stooping, lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling 10 pounds or more.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; may require earlier or later hours as needed to meet essential job functions.
Requirements
Proven skills, knowledge base, and judgment for independent decision making.
Excellent organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
Ability to function effectively within a multi-disciplinary team; strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills.
Able to work independently as well as in a team.
