Overview

The Engineering Support Intern position provides hands-on laboratory support for product development, technical sales support, and raw materials qualifications for a wax production facility. The plant produces wax blends that are primarily used as additives to improve the processing of PVC compounds. Our process combines melt blending paraffin and polyethylene waxes and reacting stearic acid with lime or a polyol to make calcium stearate or ester waxes. The internship is in our development lab and involves making wax blends, blending PVC compounds, and testing PVC compounds on a torque rheometer. There may be an opportunity to help run a lab extruder and injection molder.
Responsibilities

Make laboratory-scale wax blends
Melting and mixing raw wax materials
Run lab-scale chemical reactions where stearic acid is reacted with lime or a polyol to make calcium stearate or ester waxes
Make PVC compounds
Blend PVC compound ingredients including wax samples in a 1-litre or 10-L mixer
Test PVC compounds with a torque rheometer
Operate or assist in testing PVC compounds on a lab extruder or small injection molder
Analytical testing of wax properties, including:

Acid Value determination (titration of dissolved wax samples with a base)
Drop Point
DSC and TGA thermal analysis
Powder Flow Tester (possible project to measure the tendency of waxes to clump)

Qualifications

Currently enrolled as a college student pursuing a degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related field (Chemical Engineering or Chemistry majors preferred)
Some college chemistry laboratory experience preferred
Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team
Compensation

The annual base hourly range for this position is $26.25 per hour. This salary information serves as a general guideline.
