Responsibilities
In this role, you will lead and mentor technicians, manage complex projects, and oversee hardware specifications and installation processes. Responsibilities include reviewing construction plans, preparing cost estimates, coordinating timelines, and ensuring timely completion of work orders.
Serve as a technical expert, guiding, directing, and coaching journey and contributing level technicians on application and installation techniques.
Research critical information, including key bittings array, construction documents, and guidelines.
Understand and apply Simple K enrollment process and procedures.
Demonstrate the ability to review and verify construction plans and hardware specifications according to University specifications and construction guidelines.
Proficiently work with hardware specification take‑offs.
Handle project management tasks with a working knowledge of processes and timelines.
Provide cost estimates and proposals for work, which includes evaluating and researching necessary requirements from vendor sources.
Monitor and track all orders to ensure timely completion.
Assist the supervisor in developing timelines and milestones by identifying critical and less critical activities.
Allocate appropriate resources and time for the completion of one's own work and that of the team, avoiding scheduling conflicts.
Communicate effectively with customers regarding the necessary scope of work.
Lead and generally oversee Journey‑level technicians, ensuring that both Journey and contributing level technicians have sufficient resources to complete jobs.
Maintain clear verbal and written communication with supervisors, team members, and the public.
Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 30–60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Perform tasks requiring standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and utilizing various tools.
Safely climb and work from different types of ladders to access elevated or below‑grade areas such as roofs, above‑ceiling spaces, and utility pits.
Be exposed to and work in areas where insects or small animals are occasionally present.
All essential tasks must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
Other Responsibilities
Maintain on‑call status; responsible for continuing education and license renewal requirements. Oversee special assignments as assigned by the supervisor.
Position designated as essential personnel; may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even if the University is operating on an alternate schedule. May assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Extensive experience as a locksmith, preferably in an institutional setting, but not mandatory.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
Familiarity with AiM work order systems is a plus, but not required.
Membership in the Associated Institutional Locksmith Association or other recognized industry organization is preferred.
Certified Journey Level Certification and/or Fire Door Inspector Certification is advantageous but not mandatory.
Required License or Certification
Current locksmith license.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
