Job Description
Stevens Towing Co., Inc. has a full‑time Safety Technician and Tank Cleaner Intern position located in Yonges Island, SC. The position requires safety experience in ship and barge repair and shipyard competent certifications.
Job Summary
Assist in supplying Health and Safety resources for shipyard personnel working in vessel and/or barge repair under the direction of the company Safety Officers. Experience in ship repair and shipyard competent certifications preferred.
Responsibilities
Assist in various safety training sessions and safety orientations.
Review information on upcoming jobs prior to starting work to ready the site and prepare employees for accurate and safe work.
Participate in preparing written safety and environmental procedures for each project.
Coordinate, schedule, and conduct environmental, health, safety inspections, audits, and surveillances as directed by the Safety Officer.
Maintain all required environmental, health, and safety records and documentation.
Coordinate collection and removal of all Hazmat; knowledge of Hazmat is preferred.
Assist with bilge, tank, void, and cofferdam maintenance, pumping, cleaning and preparation for gas‑free certifications.
Operate vacuum truck, set up and break down equipment associated with bilge and tank cleaning.
Perform work related to cleanliness, gas‑free certification, and pumping operations.
Operate forklifts, man lifts, and similar equipment.
Qualifications
Driver’s License.
TWIC or ability to obtain a TWIC.
Read, write, and communicate clearly in English.
Computer experience: MS Word, Excel, and Access.
Good communication skills; ability to teach large groups and interact with various people on many levels.
Common sense and ability to follow basic functions such as hose setups, air connections, tank/void cleaning, bilge cleaning/pumping, and vacuum truck watch.
Knowledge of Spanish and a 30‑hour OSHA Certification is a plus.
Requirements
The role is physically demanding; the candidate must be able to crawl in tight spaces, bilges, and tanks, and perform bilge, tank, void, and cofferdam maintenance, pumping, cleaning, and gas‑free certification work.
