
Engineering Intern

Overview
The Engineering Intern will be based in Helena, MT or Billings, MT and will conduct Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP) surveys using USFS protocols to assess conditions of road-stream crossings on the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest (NPCNF). Surveys target roads with upcoming timber harvests or water quality concerns to help the NPCNF identify candidates for replacement or AOP installation as funding becomes available.
Essential Job Functions
Collect data and follow USFS protocols.
Collect and record accurate field data using paper forms and tablets.
Operate 4x4 vehicles on unpaved and remote roads.
Work effectively both independently and as part of a team while maintaining communication with project staff.
Adhere to all health and safety protocols in remote and field-based environments.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
HS diploma required.
Actively pursuing degree in environmental or engineering related discipline encouraged.
Prior field experience with environmental monitoring and field surveys.
Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle.
Comfortable working in remote locations and challenging field conditions.
Ability to use GPS units, tablets, and field data collection tools.
Must be familiar with sampling equipment such as stadia rods, inclinometers, measuring tapes, tables, mapping software (such as ArcPro, Survey 123, Field Maps, etc.).
Must be able to read and follow directions indicated in protocols.
Ability and flexibility to travel on short notice and perform field tasks (minimum of 75% - 100% of travel required).
A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations is required.
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications
Recent graduate with a BS degree in environmental or engineering related discipline.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 40 lbs or occasionally more.
Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions for field work.
Ability to walk long distances and have full range of motion to support field activities.
Ability and flexibility to travel on short notice and perform field tasks (minimum of 75% - 100% of travel required).
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
Based out of the local Helena, MT or Billings, MT office with field-related travel across the NPCNF in Idaho.
Field tasks will be outside and may involve weather, altitude, terrain, and noise. Duties include remaining stationary for periods, walking, bending, lifting, and site assessments.
Occasional office-related tasks involve desk work, computer use, and related activities.
Additional Information
Part-time temporary position; hours will vary based on project/client needs.
Work will be performed primarily in a field setting and occasionally in an office setting.
Target salary range: $22.00 / hour to $24.00 / hour. Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including education, related work experience, skills, location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies.
