Job Overview
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS‑II) operates a state‑of‑the‑art electron storage ring and provides bright x‑ray beams to the scientific community. The Beam Operations group seeks a Floor Coordinator / Operator to support overnight operations, ensure safe beamline activity, and respond to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
Safe operation of NSLS‑II beam lines, including safety system checkouts and monitoring user safety.
Act as point of contact for fire/rescue and other emergencies, and coordinate with building staff.
Complete building tours daily to identify equipment problems and oversee building safety.
Support multi‑shift coverage; primary overnight shifts (8 pm–8:30 am) with ½ hour turnover.
Assist in the operation of the Control System Studio (CSS) during 24 / 7 periods of user beam and accelerator studies.
Respond to non‑emergency machine operations issues.
Participate in an extensive training program and work under an experienced Floor Coordinator.
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; BS in a technical field with ≥2 years experience, or AA with technical program completion +6 years experience, or technical high‑school certificate with ≥7 years experience, or 8 years relevant experience.
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) and effective communication skills.
Ability to hear and understand speech, arm/hand dexterity for computer use, and repeat motions for computer work.
Physical capability to lift up to 20 lbs, climb ladders, and tolerate static magnetic fields.
Preferred Qualifications
BS in a technical field with ≥4 years experience, or AA with technical program completion +8 years experience, or technical high‑school certificate +9 years experience, or ≥10 years experience.
Benefits and Compensation
Trend salary range $75,000–$110,000 per year. The role is onsite in Upton, New York, with overnight shift work and included shift differential and overtime pay.
