Role Summary
The Sr. Home Loan Underwriter is responsible for making consistent quality loan decisions on residential mortgage loans in accordance with company and agency standards. This person will be member-focused and offer alternative solutions to meet the members financial needs. This role may be involved in several types of mortgage lending (Conventional, Portfolio, and Home Equity). This position has proven the ability to handle significant responsibilities in addition to the Mortgage Underwriter II role. This position acts as a resource for other Underwriters and Operations staff, answering questions, conducting training and acting as a mentor.
What You Will Be Doing
Analyze income, credit, assets, and loan application according to company and agency underwriting guidelines to produce a sound credit decision
Comply with TRID, Ability to Repay/Qualified Mortgage rules and other compliance regulations
Ensure Loan Origination System reflects accurate loan data
Perform a thorough analysis of collateral to ensure property meets company and agency guidelines and the appraisal quality and completeness is acceptable
Work in tandem with loan officers and operations staff to address loan conditions, questions, issues, and problem solve
Collaborate with management on counter offers and exceptions
Issue denials, suspensions, and counteroffers
Maintain ongoing knowledge of company and agency guidelines, updates, and trends
Manage a pipeline and achieve production and turnaround standards set forth by management
Display mutual respect, trust, and dignity while acting in the best interest of the credit union following all policies and procedures
Maintain and protect all sensitive data utilizing the highest standard of confidentiality and professionalism
Willingly perform other job‑related projects and duties as assigned, self‑initiating assistance to team members when appropriate
Provide support, training, coaching, and mentoring as the subject‑matter expert for the underwriting team to maintain organizational consistency
Assist in internal audits and external exams as applicable
Work with management on FHA and VA underwriting approval authority projects
About You
Exhibited ability to perform with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Proven ability to effectively communicate ideas and information both orally and in writing
Demonstrated success in a deadline driven environment, adapting to changes and prioritizing competing demands
Established in consistently contributing to positive morale of the team
Consistently displays interpersonal skills to relate effectively and professionally to peers and all levels of management
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a diverse work group as well as independently with minimal supervision
Qualifications
High school diploma; or equivalent completion of specialized course of study, training, and experience
Minimum of five (5) years of relevant mortgage loan underwriting experience required
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with correspondent lending desired
FHA DE or VA LAPP SAR desired
Expert experience with loan origination software as it pertains to job functions
Proven success maintaining monthly goals
Proficient with standard Microsoft Office Suite
Some travel is required to achieve training and business objectives
Valid Driver’s License is required

Full Salary Range
Richland, WA: $34.60–$57.67
Spokane, WA: $34.60–$57.67
Renton, WA: $41.84–$69.73
Vancouver, WA: $36.81–$61.34
While our full pay range is listed, most new team members typically start between the minimum and midpoint based on their experience and qualifications. This approach gives room to grow within the role as your career progresses with us!
