Job Overview
The Operator, Extruder 2 is a high skill role that will set up and operate extrusion lines and related equipment, including nylon extruders, coilers, pay‑offs and take‑ups. Lines may operate as single or two‑person lines based on line or product complexity. Frequently used machines include Jacket/Romex and Tandem Lines (BWP), Circuit Size THHN Extruder and Jacket/Romex Lines at North Campus.
General Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Must read, write, and speak English; bilingual in Spanish is a plus
Must be able to stand and lift heavy loads for long periods
Must be able to read and comprehend production orders and instrumentation on complex equipment
Basic math skills (adding, subtracting, etc.)
Primary Job Tasks
Work under supervision and maintain communication with supervisor and peers through verbal instruction and reports
Lift up to 45 lbs
Put scrap into the designated scrap bins
Properly set up extrusion line and related equipment with correct tip, die, and wire size
Maintain correct wire size, insulation thickness, and concentricity
Apply correct print with acceptable quality on cable
Observe Southwire safety rules, maintain good housekeeping, and perform all other duties as assigned
Use proper compound and correct amounts of color concentrate
Keep wire and compound loss minimal during start‑ups and change‑overs
Maintain correct inventory of WIP tags daily
Cross Training
Required to cross‑train on equipment within your identified workgroup. After training, may fill the position in case of absence or vacancy and will rotate regularly to maintain skill proficiency.
Quality
Use the company's ISO Quality System documentation to guide daily quality activities. Do not release products until all quality checks have passed. Immediately report quality issues to the supervisor or quality manager.
Safety
Safety is a condition of employment. Follow all environmental rules and procedures and handle materials to minimize impact. Extruders generate radiant heat; machinery can be noisy. Wear required PPE, review Job Hazard Analyses, Safety Data Sheets, maintain 5S standards, and perform pre‑operation safety inspections.
Physical/Environmental Demands
Daily performance requires balance, climbing, fingering, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, stooping, walking and sitting. Must work in hot and cold environments typical of a prefabricated building without climate control and be exposed to water, heat, cold, dust, and fumes.
