About the Position
The City's Economic Development Department seeks a skilled, creative and energetic intern to assist with special events and support promotion/marketing. This internship offers hands-on experience in event coordination, program development, and administrative support within a dynamic community-focused environment. This position will assist with event logistics, on-site operations, public outreach, event promotion and marketing, and other related duties. The position requires a flexible schedule, including the availability to work Friday evenings until 9 p.m., mid-May through September, at the Farmers Market, and on some weekends. The ideal candidate will be able to work 40 hours per week through the end of September.
Selected Examples of Duties
This position will work collaboratively with city staff and community partners to promote, coordinate and implement special events. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Assist with event planning, scheduling, coordination and execution.
Provide outreach to the general public and various agencies, organizations and businesses to increase event registration and participation.
Provide outreach to increase community engagement and attendance at events, including communications with area businesses and the public through meetings, email and phone conversations.
Assist with event promotion and marketing, including developing websites, digital and print content.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Current senior-level college enrollment in or degree completion in the fields of hospitality, event planning, marketing, communications, business management or sales. Must possess basic skills in Microsoft Office applications.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
This position works indoors and outdoors (in varied weather conditions) with a variety of businesses and individuals. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.; work cooperatively as a member of a team; and communicate successfully with city staff and the public. Must be able to express ideas and direction clearly, both verbally and in writing; manage time wisely and prioritize tasks.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid State driver's license. Successful completion of a background check, including a criminal check, is a requirement of employment at the City of Spokane Valley.
