Assistant Engineer (Non-Union)
Summary:

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Engineer is responsible for the preparation, operation and maintenance of all vessel machinery and systems throughout the voyage.

Essential Functions

Attend to mechanical functions aboard the vessel.

Operate machinery as required to carry out the vessel’s mission (main engines, auxiliaries, winches, etc.).

Monitor, maintain and repair equipment and vessel machinery.

Responsibilities

Manage fuel, lube, and other fluids essential to equipment operation.

Maintain fuel and ballast conditions to achieve trim & stability as directed by the vessel Master.

Work under the direction of the Chief Engineer regarding engineering to maintain safe and efficient operating conditions.

Perform engine room painting and cleaning as needed to ensure a clean and well‑maintained space.

Assist on deck as directed by the Master.

Qualifications

Assistant Engineer – Oceans, Any HP, Limited – 1600 GRT/3000 ITC License.

STCW Endorsements: Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW); Able Seafarer Engine; Rating forming part of an Engineering Watch (RFPEW); Proficiency in survival craft (PSC); Medical First-Aid Provider; Advanced Firefighting; Basic Training; Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties/Security Awareness.

Valid USCG 719k Medical Certificate (STCW).

Valid TWIC Card.

Valid Driver License.

Valid Passport – must be able to travel internationally with no felonies or other convictions that restrict entry to Canada or other nations.

All qualified candidates must submit the above required documents with their application to be reviewed for the position.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) or higher.

Experience

Experience as Assistant Engineer aboard ocean‑going vessels, or comparable engineering service aboard offshore vessels or a Maritime Graduate.

1 year service as Engineer.

Familiarity with deck machinery.

Familiarity with PLC control systems.

Computer proficiencies with Word, Excel, Outlook and maintenance‑based programs.

Preferred: Towing Vessel, Caterpillar or Wartsila Engines, Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning System Training, Helm vessel management software.

Reports To
Chief Engineer and/or Master of the Vessel.

Supervisory Responsibilities
May oversee and direct other engineering department personnel.

Compensation

Competitive Day Rate.

Paid Travel – Door to Door.

Paid Training.

Rotation – As needed – Up to 30 day hitches with possible extension.

Duration/Travel/Timeline Details
10% Travel – To and from the vessel along with shoreside training.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions / Work Environment
Works both inside and outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to enter areas with restricted headroom and climb ladders. Must meet the 719K physical standard.

Must work in a drug‑free workplace; never under the influence of mind‑altering prescriptions or other drugs, including alcohol.
