Sr. Cell Design Engineer, Cell Materials Engineering
Tesla, Palo Alto, CA, United States
What To Expect
Battery cells are the common denominator for every Tesla product. Our product requirements demand ground-up cell architectures with state-of-the-art performance, manufactured at volumes that are orders of magnitude higher than the products they power. Our environment is fast-paced and incredibly exciting, so being passionate and self‑motivated to push your limits is critical. Our team works with engineering groups across various disciplines, requiring strong communication skills and a team‑first mentality. You will work alongside seasoned industry experts, high aptitude recent graduates, and people from every stage in between. We are looking for anyone with an exceptional ability to solve problems in both individual and team settings.
What You’ll Do
Drive physical and electrochemical electrode design from concept to production
Interface with the broader cell development teams to define electrode design targets (fast charge, lifetime, cost, etc.) for current and future cell programs
Work with cell materials component owners and mechanical design engineers to understand, document, and disseminate material and design options for the electrode stack
Develop electrode design options (e.g., loading, density, composition, etc.) that meet performance and manufacturability targets for Tesla’s cells
Combine upstream stack design targets with manufacturing and equipment process capability to determine realistic designs
Proactively identify potential product failures, analyze their severity and likelihood, and identify mitigation steps
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
3+ years of experience in lithium‑ion cell design
Familiarity with battery cell operation, design, and testing
Experience in FMEA
Excellent project management and organizational skills
Ability to communicate and consolidate information across multiple stakeholders and teams
Experience with taking a product or design from concept to manufacturing is a plus
