Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in social or behavioral science and experience equivalent to three years of full-time professional social or human services counseling work; additional qualifying graduate coursework in social work may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years; or three years of full-time professional social or human services counseling experience with the State of Tennessee.
Applicants for this class may be required to: complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority; agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority; supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint-based criminal history records check; submit to a review of their status on the Department of Health's vulnerable persons registry.
Overview
Under general supervision, is responsible for professional social counseling work of average difficulty and supervisory work of routine difficulty; and performs related work as required. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising subordinates providing professional social counseling services. This class differs from that of Social Counselor 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for professional social counseling work and is not supervising.
Responsibilities
Direct, train, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinate employees according to policy. Supervises and participates in the preparation and maintenance of reports related to assigned program.
Assess the quality of services based on identified needs and appropriateness of referrals. Monitor program activities to ensure goals are met and make periodic home visits to observe interactions with external customers.
Provide guidance and advice to improve efficiency and quality of program operations and services.
Perform liaison work and communicate effectively with other departments, governmental entities, and other internal/external customers in explaining programs and obtaining desired actions. Maintain contact with other related program staff to coordinate efforts.
Handle complaints and resolve conflicts from external and internal customers. Discuss difficult cases with subordinates or supervisors to assist in problem solving.
