Unit Support Associate | ED

Overview
In collaboration with and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Unit Support Associate will assist in activities directly related to the care of patients and operation of the unit. This includes providing direct 1:1 observation of patients related to safety or behavioral issues and supporting unit operations through maintenance of supplies and workflow.

Responsibilities

Maintain Patient Safety: environmental safety through room sweep and checklist; adhere to pediatric safety principles (handrails, seat belts, direct observation); never leave patient unattended; intervene quickly to calm, redirect, reorient patient or guide patient to prevent harm to self or others; remain in patient room unless relieved by nurse or another Unit Support Associate; accompany patient for procedures off the unit.

Meet/Satisfy Patient Needs: engage patient with age-appropriate distraction and goal-oriented activities; provide therapeutic activities and conversations; reinforce positive behavior; assist with linen changes and room stocking; assist in activities of daily living (washing, toileting, position changes, meals); maintain universal precautions; assist with breaks as directed by Charge Nurse.

Maintain a Clean and Safe Environment: keep room clean and tidy; maintain a calm environment; stock unit and nurse servers/carts as directed by Charge Nurse when not responsible for direct observation; monitor common unit areas for cleanliness and supplies; report safety hazards to staff; assist in unit support activities (room setup, answer call bells, customer service).

Effective Communication with Other Staff: report pertinent patient information and call for assistance if safety concerns arise; establish priorities with RN and communicate tasks to team; maintain regular communication with RN; report escalating behaviors to RN; confer with RN on unfamiliar patient care issues; ensure information sharing during handoffs.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Basic computer skills (preferred)

Knowledge of child development (preferred)

Licenses And Certifications

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required)
