Group Exercise Instructor Job Description

Reporting to the Health and Wellness Director and working with other Wellness staff, the Group Exercise Instructor instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. The instructor effectively builds community within the class, modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs, and fosters a welcoming atmosphere for all skill and fitness levels. The YMCA seeks a leader who can develop sound healthy habits through engaging leadership in class settings and who will play an active role in expanding our group exercise offerings to meet growing member needs.

Qualified candidates will lead participants through a series of movements and exercises safely and effectively. Candidates must hold a current Group Exercise certification from a nationally certifying body, with NCCA accredited certifications preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to provide high quality experiences for members and guests.

Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving goals related to health and well-being.

Maintains working knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training to provide effective information and support to members.

Builds authentic relationships with members; helps them connect with each other and with the YMCA.

Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.

Celebrates program participants’ achievements related to goals, skill mastery, or overall health and well-being.

Keeps accurate class attendance records through our online Group Exercise Management software (MotionVibe).

Follows YMCA policies and procedures and responds to emergency situations.

Resolves member issues professionally in alignment with YMCA values.

Education and Experience

At least one year of experience in a Group Exercise setting.

NCCA accredited certification such as ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA, etc.

Current certification required for specific formats (e.g., Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump, Body Combat).

Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.

Understanding of internal and external marketing and special events.

Skills and Competencies

Understanding of relationships within the association and staff, and ability to enhance and cultivate those relationships.

Ability to interpret and implement the YMCA mission and goals into classes and programs.

Demonstrates commitment to an inclusive environment for participants of all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences.

Works as an integral member of a staff team.

Communicates effectively with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.

Degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education preferred but not required.

CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.

Minimum of one year of experience in fitness.
