An established boutique family law firm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is seeking an experienced Family Law Attorney to join its respected practice. With more than 30 years in business, the firm has built an excellent reputation, a loyal client base, and a steady flow of family law matters throughout the Triangle. The practice handles a wide range of domestic matters including divorce, child custody, support, equitable distribution, and related cases.
The firm currently consists of five attorneys, including the owner, along with a strong support team of experienced paralegals and legal assistants. About the Opportunity
This is a primarily in‑person role based in Chapel Hill, ideal for an attorney who can step into active matters with confidence and work independently with minimal oversight. The firm values trust, flexibility, and results over micromanagement. For the right candidate, there is a genuine long‑term opportunity to take over or lead the firm if desired.
Responsibilities
Handle a broad range of family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, equitable distribution, and related domestic cases
Manage cases from intake through resolution, including negotiation, mediation, hearings, and trial preparation
Draft pleadings, motions, agreements, and other legal documents
Represent clients in court appearances and contested proceedings
Work closely with paralegals and support staff to ensure efficient case management
Maintain strong client relationships through responsive and thoughtful counsel
Contribute to the long‑term growth and continued success of the practice
Qualifications
Active North Carolina Bar license in good standing
Minimum of 2+ years of family law experience required
Ability to confidently step into active cases with minimal training or supervision
Strong communication, advocacy, and case management skills
Team‑oriented mindset with the ability to work independently
Comfortable working fully in‑person initially (remote flexibility available after six months or as needed for appointments)
Preferred Background
Existing ties to the Triangle market
Ability to bring an existing caseload or referral relationships
Interest in long‑term succession and eventually leading or taking over the practice in approximately 3–10 years
North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law preferred
Compensation & Benefits
$90,000–$120,000 base salary, depending on experience
Percentage of billables collected on top of base compensation
Benefits begin after 90 days
Vision and dental insurance with 50% of premiums paid by the firm
50% employer‑paid life insurance
401(k) with matching up to 3% of salary
10 paid holidays
10 accrued PTO days
