Job Summary
The Electrification & Energy System Division is looking for an engineer to support the development of Caterpillar Advanced Power conversion systems. In this role, you will design and develop power conversion systems for Caterpillar advanced power products, including off‑board DC chargers, automated and manual connection systems, bi‑directional inverters, and related controls/operational interfaces. You will collaborate with cooling, battery, power conversion, and controls teams, as well as purchasing and validation teams, and be responsible for design and performance quality of charging systems from development through production.

What You Will Do

Develop test plans, validation procedures, and documentation to ensure functional and performance compliance, taking full ownership of the assigned task.

Design, model, and simulate power electronics systems.

Prototype, debug, and perform fault analysis for power electronic system hardware (inverters/converters) and optimize.

Collaborate with design engineers to ensure smooth transition from design to validation and production.

Collaborate with mechanical, PCB layout, and firmware engineers to develop and validate design.

Utilize laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal cameras, etc.) to conduct detailed analysis and root‑cause investigations.

Perform design validation under various operating conditions (temperature, voltage, load profile, EMI/EMC).

Interface with suppliers and internal manufacturing teams for design‑for‑testability (DFT) and design‑for‑manufacturing (DFM).

Maintain rigorous safety protocols during high‑voltage testing activities.

What You Will Have

Analytical Thinking: Extensive experience and knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions.

Effective Communications: Working knowledge and understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to transmit, receive, and interpret ideas accurately.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives and projects, making effective judgments on prioritization and time allocation.

Technical Excellence: Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

Hands‑on experience with converter/inverter prototyping, test benches, and debugging.

Strong understanding of DC‑DC converters, AC‑DC inverters, magnetics, and control algorithms.

Proficiency in using lab instruments and data acquisition tools.

Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or LTspice.

Experience with standards and compliance (UL, IEC, ISO) for power electronics systems.

Computer‑Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive experience and knowledge of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.

Product Design - MFG: Extensive experience and knowledge of product design processes, approaches, tools and techniques; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.

Product Testing: Working knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.

Degree Requirement

Associate's degree in Engineering

Top Candidates Will Also Have

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering

Experience with automated test systems.

Understanding of EMI/EMC testing, thermal design, and environmental validation.

Knowledge of embedded systems and microcontroller‑based converter control.

Additional Information

This position is located in Mossville, IL and requires five days a week in‑office availability.

This position does offer domestic relocation.

This position does not offer visa sponsorship.

Travel is expected less than 20% of the time.

Summary Pay Range: $95,640.00 – $143,520.00
