
Student Employee-COM-Peer Tutor

Nature & Purpose Of Position
The primary role of the Peer Tutor is to support Educational Affairs’ mission to support student learning in the classroom by providing tutorial services for first‑year SHSU‑COM students. This position requires excellent communication skills, adaptability in teaching methods to meet student needs, and a desire to see students succeed. The Peer Tutor may implement instructional activities in both individual and group tutorial sessions.
Responsibilities
Work with students to help them understand key concepts learned in the classroom.
Coordinate meetings and schedules with tutees as appropriate.
Teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note‑taking skills, and approaches to answering test questions.
Provide students positive and constructive feedback.
Participate in an initial training program for developing teaching techniques and learning skills, and attend ongoing training sessions as required by MSA and HR.
Monitor students’ attendance and progress.
Attend staff meetings.
Complete data entry tasks using required database software.
Document and communicate student progress, especially if additional difficulties are encountered in the tutoring sessions or if the tutor suspects a student requires additional university resources.
Qualifications
SHSU‑COM OMS2 Student Doctor in good academic standing.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Approval of course director/Phase I lead required; additional academic performance data may be reviewed to determine eligibility.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Complete the Peer Tutor Course Selection document and submit it with the application.
