Civil Engineer – Land Development Engineer
VHB’s Virginia offices are seeking a Civil Designer or Civil Engineer to join the Land Development and Planning & Design team. The role involves collaborating across disciplines on projects ranging from residential and institutional developments to large‑scale industrial and biotech sites.
Responsibilities
Work within a professional team to develop site/civil engineering plans and specifications for a variety of projects.
Support preparation of land development design and permitting documents.
Draft plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Prepare and review drawings and specifications that document the designed systems.
Participate in client, regulatory, and stakeholder meetings to understand requirements and discuss design and permitting topics.
Assist construction administration by coordinating, responding to contractor questions, and reviewing submittals and field reports.
Assist in managing small, medium, and large projects.
Contribute to new project opportunities by preparing proposals, gathering information, and formatting documents.
Skills and Attributes
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Project, and MS Office; ArcGIS skills highly desirable.
Strong understanding of design, detailing, and construction drawing preparation, including site layout, grading, hardscape, drainage, and planting.
Knowledge of land development construction codes and regulations.
Knowledge of construction materials and detailing, including sections and material specifications.
Experience with green initiatives and low‑impact design (LEED, Envision).
Creative, detail‑oriented engineer with strong design, research, and analytical skills; excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Qualifications
BS in Civil Engineering or a related degree.
At least 3 years of progressively responsible engineering experience on complex projects.
EIT preferred.
Experience in site layout, grading, utility design, and stormwater management.
Understanding of I‑64 and the Virginia market preferred.
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D software required.
