Description
HGL is seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator to support work on the Zortman Landusky site in North Central Montana. The operator will run the water treatment plants and monitor operations to maintain efficient treatment rates, adjusting process controls as needed. Systems include computer monitoring, lime silos, polymer mixers, compressors, pumps, CO2 injection, tank mixers, and filtration equipment. The operator will also manage pumping stations across the site and ensure compliance with the overall water management plan.
Responsibilities
Operate and monitor water pumping stations and treatment plant facilities.
Conduct surface and groundwater sampling, preserving samples and performing water quality analysis with bench‑top and field instruments.
Maintain capture systems, water conveyance lines, and electrical lines.
Manage daily sludge, leach pad, pond solution inspections, monitoring, and inventory.
Record pumpback checks, flow, and discharge data.
Collect influent/effluent samples and support field lab analyses (pH, conductivity, nitrates, TSS).
Assist with site‑wide maintenance: roads, reclamation, stormwater controls, snow removal, freight, fencing.
Perform preventive maintenance and non‑routine maintenance on pumps and equipment.
Operate heavy equipment: motor grader, dozer, backhoe, bobcat, boom truck, forklift, 4‑wheel drive, UTV, snowmobile; and use HDPE fusion machine, arc welder, cutting torch.
Comply with QA/QC policies and procurement policies.
Assist with construction and demolition activities as directed by site management.
Perform basic preventive maintenance, weed control, road and building maintenance.
Operate snow removal equipment (blowers, plow trucks).
Minimum Requirements
Minimum 3 years of applicable work experience.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license.
Mechanical aptitude to perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and SOPs.
Basic computer and Windows software skills.
Strong teamwork skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
Desired Qualifications
Three years of industrial experience and prior 10‑hour shift work.
Wastewater treatment certification or willingness to obtain one.
Experience with water treatment plants in mining settings.
Knowledge of chemical handling and safety.
Welding, mechanical, and/or electrical experience.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Lift/move up to 50 lbs; stand up to 70% of the time; walk long distances on uneven or mountainous terrain.
Perform repetitive hand motions, operate heavy machinery, drive vehicles, climb ladders.
Read and interpret technical documents, communicate effectively with teams and stakeholders.
Work Environment
Work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow). May be exposed to loud noise, dust, or hazardous materials. Must wear appropriate PPE. Potential for longer days up to 12 hours.
Schedule
10‑hour shifts, 7 days on, 7 days off. Weekend and holiday work required. Over‑night shifts may occur during severe winter weather. The role is non‑exempt and eligible for overtime.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.65 to $35.74, depending on contractual requirements, geographic location, experience, and skills. If your desired rate falls outside this range, we encourage you to apply as other positions may better align.
