Job Summary
Designs, maintains, tests, repairs, and troubleshoots Fire Alarm / Security / Access Control and Closed Circuit Television Systems. Works independently, ensuring work meets technical requirements set by manufacturers, NFPA, and NEC. Provides advice to supervisors and the Campus Fire Marshal on fire‐related equipment and issues. Affirms and implements the department’s Educational Equity Plan and works in a diverse, team environment.

Responsibilities
Technical/Mechanical Alarm Systems (80%) – Research, design, install, maintain, test, repair, modify, and troubleshoot fire alarm, security alarm, access control, and CCTV systems. Serve as liaison with Campus Fire Marshal; audit fire systems; maintain records and inventories; review construction plans for fire systems; train Housing staff on testing and replacement of systems; conduct on‑site audits for safety of 9,000 residents; coordinate testing and maintenance with contractors.

General Duties (10%) – Lead skilled/semi‑skilled staff; manage inspection of detectors; open and close work tickets; implement the department’s Educational Equity and Strategic Plans; use hand and power tools, testing equipment, and other mechanical tools as needed.

Safety (5%) – Follow UCSB Environmental Health and Safety policies; understand and adhere to safety regulations; report accidents; participate in safety programs; adhere to the 20‑minute rule for repetitive tasks.

Security (5%) – Lock unoccupied areas; safeguard keys and devices; keep keys on campus; notify clients of work status.

Qualifications

High School Graduate or GED.

Minimum 5 years’ experience working with fire alarm and access control systems.

Extensive experience maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting commercial fire alarm systems.

Knowledge of ADA, Title 19, NFPA standards, NEC, and fire protection systems.

Experience with security and access control equipment.

Good working knowledge of PCs, laptops, and MS Office Suite for e‑mail, reports, research, and system programming.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Special Conditions of Employment

Ability to respond to emergency calls after duty hours; may carry an after‑hours duty phone and/or shift changes.

Must hold a valid driver’s license and meet local driving record policies.

Must pass a satisfactory criminal history background check.
