Various Locations in St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, and Jefferson Counties.

What You’ll Do

Coordinate and perform construction inspections verifying that contractors’ activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.

Perform duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items such as asphaltic or Portland cement concrete plants, asphalt or concrete paving, grading, base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspect general or special items such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.

Perform measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.

Maintain required construction documentation, records and files; prepare progress and other reports, and keep supervisor informed of activities or unusual conditions.

Provide field checks for contractor surveying operations; serve as party chief on routine layout and staking; serve as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

Minimum Qualifications (ABET)

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university.

Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.

Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.

Salary by Level (ABET)

Entry: $67,307.04

Intermediate: $72,691.68

Senior: $78,506.88

Minimum Qualifications (Non‑ABET)

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, OR 8 years of experience in construction inspecting or related field.

Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.

Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.

Salary by Level (Non‑ABET)

Entry: $57,762.48

Intermediate: $62,383.68

Senior: $68,803.68

Special Working Conditions

Moderate physical activity required.

Exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, or adverse environmental characteristics.

May require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.

A postsecondary degree is required to ensure the necessary engineering knowledge.
