Position Summary
The Information Technology (IT) Technician II – Desktop Support Technician performs a variety of duties to support and maintain desktop computers, end-user applications, and related technology on the County’s Local Area Network (LAN). The role includes maintaining software application procedures, training staff on technology, documenting procedures, diagnosing and troubleshooting technical problems, and supporting critical business activities.

Salary
The 2026 salary range for this position is $23.59 to $35.38 per hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Setup, support, and maintenance of technology including desktop and laptop/mobile computers, peripherals, tablets, phones, and other handheld devices.

Work with staff and application vendors to implement and maintain applications.

Implement security configurations on end-user technology devices.

Provide main helpdesk support for resolution of technology issues, installation, and repair; prioritize support in a timely manner.

Maintain an accurate asset inventory for technology equipment and software.

Maintain accurate documentation of procedures for installing and configuring county applications and operating systems.

Provide recommendations and updates regarding technology performance, enhancements, and upgrades.

Assist in the evaluation, planning, and implementation of new technologies.

Maintain System Center Configuration Management (SCCM) and clients on the PCs.

Perform content updates to County systems.

Coordinate and conduct staff training related to significant changes in technology practices or utilization.

Coordinate and organize multiple agency efforts during technology enhancements, upgrades, and implementations.

Setup customized/specialized software and technology including for the Sheriff’s Office.

Write queries to extract specialized reports from Sheriff’s office customized systems.

Participate in relevant committees and organizations as requested.

Assist as needed in overall IT projects and end-user support.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems, Active Directory accounts, security, and group membership, MS Office, and MS Outlook.

Knowledge of New Technology File System (NTFS) file and share.

Knowledge of local area network operations, security products for antivirus clients, and web browsing.

Knowledge of operating system image installation.

Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve software and hardware problems related to desktop / PC environment, including peripherals, both remotely and at user’s physical location.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, sound judgement, and reliability of time and attendance.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.

Ability to organize and prioritize work.

Ability to communicate effectively and provide training to applicable end-users.

Ability to deliver excellent customer service.

Ability to maintain regular and timely work attendance; work outside of business hours as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) year associate’s degree in computer science or related field and one-year experience; or
4 years of experience supporting desktop PCs in a business-type environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Experience

Prior helpdesk business environment experience and/or experience with Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft office, including Outlook.

Experience in a business environment with microcomputer hardware repair and software installs, including upgrades.

Experience in a business environment with smartphones.

Experience in a business environment with computers on a Microsoft Windows Server network.

Required Certifications & Licenses

Valid Minnesota driver’s license with proof of insurance.

Preferred Certifications

CompTIA Certification: A+ Certified; Network+ Certified.

Relationships

Regular interaction with County staff.

Provide individual or small group instructions to train end-users on new systems.

Occasionally works with external vendors to set up applications or resolve issues.

Working Conditions

Work mainly performed in an office and at users’ locations across the county.

Work requires driving to county facilities.

Physical Requirements

Desk work involving computer, telephone, and other office equipment.

Communicate effectively with County staff and Board.

Read screens and document information.

Drive in various light and weather conditions.

Type and use a computer or mobile device.

Office work may involve reaching for documents, standing, walking, repetitive motions.

Lift and carry files/material weighing up to 50 lbs.
