
Litigation Paralegal, Temp-to-hire - San Francisco

Overview
A well-established San Francisco-based law firm is seeking a Litigation Paralegal for a temp-to-hire opportunity. This role is ideal for a hands-on litigation professional who is comfortable balancing both paralegal and legal secretarial responsibilities and who brings a positive, go-getter attitude to the team. The firm is looking for someone dependable, adaptable, and willing to pitch in wherever needed to support a busy litigation practice.
Responsibilities
Paralegal Duties (Approximately 80%)
Draft and prepare pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, and legal correspondence
Conduct legal research using LexisNexis and compile summaries for attorney review
Manage discovery processes, including document review, production, privilege logs, and coordination with vendors
Prepare case files, exhibits, and binders for depositions, mediations, hearings, and trial
Review, organize, and summarize medical records, billing records, and other case documentation
Maintain accurate and well-organized case files in Clio, tracking deadlines and case progress
Assist with calendaring, court coordination, and overall case management
Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and vendors
Support billing-related tasks, including time and expense entry review
Legal Secretarial Duties (Approximately 20%)
Format, proofread, and finalize legal documents for filing and service
Coordinate and schedule depositions, meetings, and court appearances
Handle state and federal e-filing and manage service of process
Maintain attorney calendars and track litigation deadlines
Assist with incoming and outgoing correspondence, mail, and phone coverage as needed
Practice Areas
Defense litigation with a focus on Maritime/Admiralty and Insurance
Additional exposure may include Civil Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Construction, Contracts, Personal Injury, Product Liability, Transportation, Workers' Compensation, Collections, and Debt matters
Qualifications
Required
Ideal candidate will have 6+ years of combined paralegal and legal secretarial experience in a litigation setting; candidates with 4-5 years will be considered if highly capable
Strong litigation experience including discovery, case preparation, and document drafting
Proficiency with LexisNexis and Clio
Polished writing skills and professional demeanor
Comfortable billing time and supporting attorneys in fast-paced litigation matters
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and related tools
Paralegal certificate preferred
Preferred
Experience with California state and federal e-filing
Familiarity with medical records, exhibits, and trial preparation
Experience working in defense-side litigation
Work Environment
Position type: Temp-to-hire
Schedule: Full-time, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility
Work location: On-site in San Francisco initially, with potential for hybrid schedule over time
