Job Summary
The O'Leary laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health, is seeking to fill a position as a research specialist. The laboratory studies immunological responses to normal microbiota, metabolites, and tissue injury with a focus on the gastrointestinal tract. This is an exciting opportunity for hands‑on training and mentorship in immunology and tissue biology, with the opportunity to establish an independent project and publish as a team. The research specialist will assist the team by performing a wide array of experimental techniques such as PCR, quantitative PCR, ion flux experiments, single‑cell data analysis, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence imaging, as well as in vivo manipulation of transgenic mice and murine tissue processing. Lab management tasks include mouse colony management; assisting in purchasing and budgeting; managing undergraduate assistants; and serving as the chemical hygiene officer.
Work Location:
This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Key Job Responsibilities
Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials.
Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences.
Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results.
Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders.
Performs literature reviews and writes reports.
Provides operational guidance on day‑to‑day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers.

Compensation
The starting salary for the position is $45,000 annually; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications
Previous laboratory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Animal handling training or experience, including animal husbandry.
Flow cytometry experience.
Experience in molecular biology techniques.
Aseptic laboratory technique experience.
Background in immunology.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree required; focus in biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a closely related field is required by the start date of the position.
