Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers, dispensing medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. Nurses apply nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. They perform all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure. Nurses use appropriate nursing skills in the treatment of inmates/residents. They attend sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents, prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined, and prepare the examining room and equipment. Nurses operate pill calls, dispense medication, and document as required by applicable policies. They call Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, or other emergencies when needed. Nurses examine and assess new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and refer them to emergency rooms or other healthcare facilities as required. They perform emergency procedures as needed and notify Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders. The role includes assisting in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Job responsibilities include: Monitoring inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. Providing guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies. Utilizing established policies and procedures in decision-making while using sound independent judgment. Regularly evaluating the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assisting with the review of medical files to ensure all services are documented. Closely monitoring potential catastrophic illnesses. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed. Complying with applicable pharmacy laws, especially concerning controlled substances. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior. Inspecting the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely storing or disposing of supplies. Providing health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as required. Assisting in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard records, reports, and logs timely and accurately. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, regulations, and legal documents. Reviewing and processing lawsuits and attending court hearings when necessary. Facilitating compliance with accreditation requirements by providing efficient medical services. Preparing and disseminating safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. Taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
