Trenchless Engineer

HDR, Bellevue, WA, United States


HDR is seeking a Trenchless Engineer to join its national Trenchless Services team. The engineer will support and lead design and field services for trenchless projects, interface with clients, manage projects, oversee construction, and ensure compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

Perform desk‑top route selection and evaluate feasibility for trenchless crossings.

Conduct site reconnaissance visits.

Develop subsurface investigation programs to determine construction feasibility.

Evaluate surface and subsurface conditions and recommend preferred construction techniques.

Coordinate with discipline leads and production staff to develop trenchless design deliverables.

Communicate with clients on project status and technical matters.

Estimate material quantities, installation loading, and stress for pipeline installations.

Apply trenchless technologies (Horizontal Directional Drilling, microtunneling, tunneling, Direct Pipe®) and participate in method selection.

Perform calculations for carrier pipe and coating specifications.

Define workspace requirements for construction equipment at crossing sites.

Prepare and review project documentation (specs, bid packages, drawings, reports, assessments, data sets).

Utilize software models for trenchless pipeline design.

Develop permit application documents and drawings.

Ensure compliance with governing legislation and industry standards.

Prepare field engineering and as‑built documents.

Contribute to updating department standards and procedures and capture lessons learned.

Apply HDR’s PMO processes to meet client delivery goals.

Establish and execute workflow for all trenchless engineering tasks.

Procure and coordinate sub‑consultants for trenchless projects.

Oversee construction in the field, monitor daily activities, and recommend corrective actions.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of professional engineering experience, including Horizontal Directional Drilling, microtunneling, or Direct Pipe®.

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Experience in remote work environments.

Proficiency in trenchless construction methods.

Team oriented and accountable for deliverables.

Strong writing and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel).

Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize tasks independently.

Self‑motivated with effective communication across dispersed teams.

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Willingness to travel as required; extensive travel may occur.

Subject to pre‑employment drug test.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Professional engineering license recognized by the relevant licensing board (PE or P.Eng).

Prior experience with Microsoft Office, MicroStation, or equivalent geotechnical software.

Experience with GeoStudio/Ensoft slope stability, settlement, seepage, and deep foundation response software.

Experience with Bentley geotechnical data management and visualization tools (gINT, OpenGround, LeapFrog).

The target salary range for this position is $125,000–$150,000, depending on experience, education, and location.
