Scrap Crane Operator

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
The Scrap Crane Operator is a hands‑on role. The Scrap Crane Operator is responsible for operating equipment to load, transport, and unload scrap baskets within the scrap yard. The Scrap Crane Operator must be able to sit for up to 12 hours a day and climb to heights of 100 feet by way of stairs and/or ladders.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Loading of scrap baskets with stainless steel and carbon scrap per heat recipe

Unloading of scrap from trucks and railroad cars and placing the scrap in the designated bin

Perform any other crane operations as assigned

Collaborate with leadership to train new operators

Perform duties of EAF crane operator while covering a shift (if signed off on by leadership)

Performed as necessary or when assigned by a supervisor

Follow all prescribed safety rules

Complete all housekeeping tasks

Complete periodic maintenance check of equipment

Assist maintenance with tasks during down times

Perform any other duties as assigned

Participate in the continuous improvement programs designed for Melt Shop Operations

SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Other duties as assigned

Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.

Must work well with others.

Good communication skills

Time Management Skills

Basic Computer Skills.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED

Mobility in plant

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, etc.

The employee is frequently required to make use of their hands for technical tasks

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Visual ability with or without correction

Communication abilities

Must be able to climb a ladder

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations

Follow Company safety rules

Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Supervisor or Manager immediately

Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or worn:

a. Safety shoes

b. Safety glasses

c. Hearing protection

d. Hard Hat

e. Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations.

f. Fire Retardant clothing

g. Acid PPE

Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy

Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines

Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations

Maintain a clean and safe work area

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations

Clean, well ventilated and safe work areas.
