Overview
Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Project Manager I
is sought to join HNTB’s Design Build (DB) Organization. The role requires demonstrated experience delivering MOT plans and construction phasing strategies on fast-paced, large, complex design-build infrastructure projects. The position is a key member of project leadership teams, responsible for managing budget, schedule, technical requirements, and contractual obligations. This role supports HNTB’s performance standards: delivery of quality work, on time, on budget, and client satisfaction through coordination with all parties to solve design.
What You’ll Do
Develop the project scope and fee quotations; assist in preparing technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
Serve as the primary client liaison; manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction. Assist with client project scoping and contract negotiations.
Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA); lead the development and execution of the project management plan. Supervise and mentor the team toward overall project objectives.
Coordinate with managers on project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention, succession planning, and staffing reporting; support performance and compensation reviews.
Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to support business development, client relationships, and pursuit efforts for strategic projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Prepare proposal and presentation materials; lead proposal development and interview presentations for strategic projects and industry/community presentations.
May be responsible for recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of staff, including staff reporting plans and performance reviews.
Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience
2 years of task management or Deputy PM experience
What You’ll Bring
Experience managing MOT design teams in the delivery of complex design-build infrastructure projects with construction values of $100M to $2.5B
Coordinate with design-build contractor, discipline task leads, and others to develop innovative, cost-effective, and alternative construction phasing strategies aligned with client budget and traffic mobility goals
Work closely with project managers, other discipline leads, and contracting partners to provide engineering for cost estimates, alternate MOT strategies, and risk identification
Project management activities including staff management, proposal development, budgets, scope, fees, workplans, and quality control for assigned projects
Act as a subject matter expert and provide senior review of designs, proposals, fee estimates, and scopes of work for projects nationwide
Supervise, coach, and mentor junior engineering staff
Involvement throughout a project’s design lifecycle (pre-award, post-award, or post-design) as applicable
This role requires travel to project offices
What We Prefer
Project management experience delivering Design-Build projects
Master’s degree in Engineering
10+ years relevant experience
Professional Engineer (PE) certification with ability to obtain PE in multiple states
Excellent communications skills
Experience in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative engineering environment
Familiarity with construction methods and ability to optimize designs accordingly

The approximate pay ranges are: New Jersey: $139,645.93 - $238,276.98; Los Angeles Metro Area/Orange County, CA: $145,993.46 - $228,348.77; nationwide: $126,950.84 - $248,205.18. These are good-faith estimates and final compensation depends on qualifications, experience, and location.
