Position Overview
The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities seeks one or more full‑time Academic Professional (P&A) instructional faculty members in journalism with a distinguished record of professional experience to join our faculty in teaching the next generation of journalism professionals. We are particularly interested in professionals whose experience would enhance the support and development of our Report for Minnesota and related community journalism programs (e.g., Hubbard Reporting Experience, MN Statehouse reporting project, and new partnerships in sports reporting).
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include teaching six courses a year (three in the fall semester and three in the spring semester) and continued contribution to the field of journalism, including professional development by broadening knowledge and expertise.
The successful applicant will teach lower and upper‑level journalism majors how to report, write, produce, edit and innovate in a fast‑changing media environment. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise as a journalism professional, journalism professional training and/or teaching experience, and the ability to inspire a diverse student body.
The School seeks someone who can teach basic to advanced courses in two or more of the following areas: introductory news reporting and writing; data journalism; investigative reporting; multimedia reporting; media ethics; and news editing. The candidate is expected to work closely with students to ensure they are trained in the necessary skills in community journalism. The preferred candidate should also have the ability to build and strengthen partnerships between faculty and students and the Twin Cities professional community, and strengthen relationships with statewide journalism outlets.
A candidate hired with advanced professional and instructional expertise may be asked to participate in curriculum development and assessment and could take a role in supporting the educational mission of the Minnesota Journalism Center linking the School’s undergraduate programs with the professional community. The university expects its journalism faculty to prepare students with the skills they need for entering the profession and that includes a contemporary understanding of how AI is used in various ways in multimedia reporting. We support professional development for faculty to continue developing their expertise in this area. We expect all hires to be actively engaged in regional, national or international professional communities and to participate in mentoring students for professional careers.
Employment Terms
This is a 100%‑time, annually renewable position over the nine‑month academic year (late‑August to late‑May). The position begins August 31, 2026 and extends through May 30, 2027. It is an academic professional position at the rank of lecturer or senior lecturer, consistent with University policy and depending on qualifications, including years of teaching and professional experience. Additional summer employment may be available.
Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications
A professional M.A. in Journalism, Mass Communication or related field.
Four or more years of related professional journalism experience.
Ability to teach journalism skills that integrate multimedia elements such as text, video, audio, photo, graphics and data.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years of major‑market regional or national experience in news reporting, editing or similar professional journalism experience, with preference for expertise in data journalism, investigative reporting, and community journalism.
Two or more years of professional journalism training, teaching or curriculum development experience since the terminal degree.
Experience working in an evolving digital environment and developing knowledge of AI impacts and relevance to the journalism profession.
Involvement and/or leadership roles in local, state, or national/international associations such as the Society of Professional Journalists, Minnesota Newspaper Association, Investigative Reporters & Editors, or as a student chapter adviser.
Experience teaching at the university level or training groups of professionals.
Commitment to advancing a culturally proficient workforce and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Lecturer Role
Lecturers in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication provide classroom teaching that supplements faculty offerings and expertise. Lecturers develop and teach courses; advise students with regard to academic concerns and school‑related organizations; provide service‑related teaching duties; participate in decisions relating to the policies, courses and programs in which there is involvement; contribute appropriate service to the school, college, and University; continue personal growth within the profession; and keep current with the field and broaden knowledge and expertise.
Salary
Annual Salary Range (across a 9‑month appointment): $70,000 – $88,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.
