Job Description

The Utility Engineer will travel around on a daily basis, ski areas by use of a truck, snowmobile and/or lift access via skis or snowboard to check water, wastewater systems, and associated utilities to ensure building operations, often during operating hours when guests are present. They will also perform hands‑on maintenance tasks including plumbing, electrical diagnostics, equipment calibration, and general facility upkeep to support uninterrupted operation of all on‑mountain systems. This position reports to the Utility Manager.
The salary range for this position is $30-$42/hr. Actual pay will be dependent on budget and experience; all our salaried roles are eligible for bonus.

Essential Job Functions/Key Job Responsibilities

Monitor water tank levels to ensure daily operation of all on‑mountain restaurants
Check water plants for chlorine, coagulants, and lubricants; log data and submit turbidity reports
Operate and monitor online water plants using computer systems across all four mountains
Rebuild small pumps and calibrate turbidity and chlorine monitoring equipment
Use basic electrical knowledge to diagnose issues with switches, relays, and control panels
Troubleshoot telemetry systems and use voltage meters for electrical diagnostics
Perform plumbing tasks including faucet replacement, sink re‑plumbing, pipe soldering, and servicing waterless fixtures
Safely operate power tools for maintenance and repair work
Participate in sewer system repairs and inspections as required
Perform general facility maintenance including carpentry, painting, HVAC, snow removal, and cleaning
Respond to emergency maintenance calls as needed
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required
Minimum of three years of experience in water works or a related utility field preferred
Class "D" Water Plant Operator’s License required; higher‑level certifications preferred
Level 1 Water Distribution License or higher preferred
Valid, unrestricted Driver’s License may be required based on operational needs
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency in mathematical calculations related to water systems, including tank and pipe volumes, PSI/elevation, chemical dosing, and pump curves
Basic computer skills required, with preferred familiarity in SCADA systems and plant control software
Sufficient training and field experience to independently perform diagnostics, routine maintenance, and system troubleshooting in utility operations
Knowledge of utility system operations, including water treatment processes, pump mechanics, and electrical components
Knowledge of safety protocols, company policies, and utility infrastructure procedures
Knowledge of regulatory and environmental standards related to water and wastewater management
Familiarity with SCADA systems and plant monitoring software
Skilled in troubleshooting utility systems, including diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues
Skilled in identifying practical, safe, and cost‑effective solutions to system issues
Skilled in communicating clearly with team members, vendors, and management
Proficient in managing time and prioritizing tasks in a dynamic environment
Proficient in operating hand and power tools safely and effectively
Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, weather conditions, and guest presence
Ability to work independently while upholding a high standard of performance
Ability to recognize and resolve minor operational discrepancies proactively
Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency or high‑pressure situations
Ability to collaborate and contribute effectively within a team
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in remote and high‑altitude environments
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Ability to reach, crouch, kneel, stand or be on your feet, kneel and bend for extended periods of time
Regularly work in adverse conditions and required to use protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials as well as an office environment and may be required to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces
Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs. individually or with assistance (weight limits can vary according to position, but no more than 50)
