AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, putting the cloud running. In this role, the senior civil engineer focuses on the design of Amazon data centers, working with a diverse team of engineers and specialists across AWS to deliver safety, security, and high capacity at low cost.

In this position, the engineer will manage external civil design consultants throughout the data center design and construction process, review site layouts, grading, power substations, storm water, utilities and pavement, coordinate with architectural, structural, and MEP engineering teams, and develop preliminary site layout concepts using Civil 3D. The engineer will also communicate design standards, maintain project documentation, develop and maintain design standards, prototypes, and specifications, create and release design RFPs, manage multiple fast‑paced projects, lead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule and consistency, and travel for site assessments and construction review (15 to 25%).

Key Responsibilities

Manage external civil design consultants through the data center design and construction process.

Review designs for site layout, grading, power substations, storm water, utilities, and pavement.

Coordinate with internal and external architectural, structural, and MEP design engineers as a technical resource and design leader.

Develop preliminary site layout concepts using Civil 3D, incorporating grading, utilities, and circulation patterns while maintaining flexibility for design evolution.

Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners.

Communicate conceptual designs and create/maintain project documentation before, during, and after construction.

Develop and maintain design standards, prototypes, and template specifications related to site design and supporting infrastructure.

Create, review, and release design RFPs for various projects, including data centers and special program facilities.

Manage multiple fast‑paced projects simultaneously; foresee and manage TPM expectations regarding cost and schedule variables.

Develop and lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency.

Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with authorities having jurisdiction (15‑25%).

Basic Qualifications

Professional Engineer License.

Knowledge of site development codes and regulations.

Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for site development.

Experience with low impact development strategies and designing and deploying sustainable design features.

Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment.

Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.

Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities including but not limited to data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.

Knowledge of power generation and substation design.

Experience in data center design, construction, and operations.

Compensation
Base salary range: 136,600.00 – 184,800.00 USD annually. Locations: Austin, TX and Seattle, WA.
